Some 20,000 people greeted prime minister Najib Razak during the
launch of his "Promises Fulfilled Tour" held at Universiti Sains
Malaysia in Penang on December 8, according to the government-controlled
national news agency Bernama.
But a Penang-based activist-journalist has detailed how the crowd was gathered.
Writing on his blog, Anil Netto posted pictures of how scores of factory buses were mobilised to the event to bring in passengers "already wearing orange ‘Janji Ditepati’ T-shirts".
"Quite a few people were seen wearing black Pekida T-shirts," he said, referring to the pro-UMNO right-wing association.
"The person who received a letter from Telekom to collect a loyalty gift turned up in the afternoon to collect an Aztec DTEC cordless phone and a TM mug(!). Plus half a dozen RM3 tickets for the month-long Pesta Pulau Pinang held nearby," said Anil, who also published pictures of goodie bags, each containing a bottle of mineral water and fruits, distributed to every attendee.
