MANILA, Philippines – Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III on Monday said he wants not only the United Nations but the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain to intervene in the worsening situation in Sabah, Malaysia.
Kiram said the sultanate has lost its faith that the Aquino administration will help it with their claim to Sabah, which it considers as its ancestral land.
"Wala naman kaming iniintay from the Philippine government kasi wala kaming nakikitang tulong. Wala na eh," Kiram told dzMM.
Asked about the sultanate's next step, Kiram said they will seek the help of the international body and the two world powers.
"May sulat ako, may sulat kami sa United Nations. And sa balita ko, the Americans will interfere, and Great Britain, [too]," he said.
Kiram made this pronouncement even as the situation in Sabah continued to get worse.
He said the last time the issue was brought before the UN was in the 1960s, under the term of then President Diosdado Macapagal.
About 200 followers of the sultanate have been holed up in Sabah since February 12 in an attempt to assert their ownership of the land.
The first major clash between Malaysian forces and the royal army erupted Friday, leaving at least 12 followers of the sultanate dead.
Another alleged ambush incident on Saturday, meanwhile, left at least 6 Malaysian policemen and 6 royal army soldiers dead.
