KUALA LUMPUR: Utusan Malaysia's
lawyer, Datuk Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin today told the High Court
that the Malay-language newspaper "did not have the luxury of time" to
verify the accuracy of a news report, when weighing the importance of a
report on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in January.
Firoz gave the explanation today in Anwar's lawsuit against the
newspaper, where last January, its report claimed that Anwar had
supported the gay rights movement, and claimed that he said so during an
interview with the British Broadcasting Television (BBC) early this
year, The Malaysian Insider reported.
Firoz said news has a "limited shelf life", and explained that television and radio news might have carried the same report.
"If newspapers need to undergo a thorough verification process to check on the truth in a report, then they should be prepared to go to print a day late. This is because it is crucial that the news is delivered to the public as soon as possible."
Firoz said the media did not have "additional time" to fact check news reports, otherwise it would not be able to publish any news.
